Tomica | Subaru Sambar Bakery

Food Trucks are no longer a novelty in Southeast Asia they are starting to become a common fixture to everyday life. This often becomes an interest translated in into collectible merchandise such as a diecast car and most of its aesthetics where it takes inspiration is based on the real world version, but most of it are made out of fiction.

The classic Tomica mainline of diecast cars continue to churn in one of the best diecast collectible in Asia notably Japan where all things cool about this country made it possible why most would invest in the toy brand.

Tomica has produced the Subaru Sambar in 1/64 scale diecast and its new model was the Bonjour Bakery truck! In the real world the Subaru Sambar is a workhorse originally manufactured by Subaru Corporation (Fuji Heavy Industries) from 1961 to 2012 that produced six generations with the seventh and eighth iteration, which is now being manufactured by Daihatsu as a rebadge for the Japanese market.

The Sambar is a microvan specifically for the Japanese market with the standard cabover is a “Kei Class” or shorthand for pick-up style that the first generation called the “Samba” introduced in 1951 is similar to the top trim package for the Volkswagen Type 2 that a 1995 model even came up with a "retro style" copy for the later mentioned VW Microbus. The first two generations were air-cooled rear-engine while the next generation uses cabover design, with the passenger cabin over the engine.

Tomica No. 10 | Bonjour Fresh Bakery

The Subaru Sambar Bakery is the fifth model to have given the No.10 designated number and was released on 16 June 2007 not to be confused with the 1987 release using a different base casting. This version of the Subaru Sambar is a Bakery truck for the Bonjour Fresh Bakery, which is based in the real brand though using an old logo that features the Eiffel Tower than its current iteration.

Like its 1987 version the back of the truck has this loaf of bread roof design with an opening side to reveal the pastries and other bread products being sold in detail. The other side of the truck features the livery of what the mobile baker truck is serving.

This 20017 version is in bright yellow and white while the bread roof is painted in brown plastic. The primary colors matches with the brand’s image as mobile bakeries truck the features little details despite the Subaru Sambar cab has become one of the generic trucks that Tomica uses for their utility service vehicles.

This foodie truck is quite a theme that rarely a diecast car collector focused on as most would get the sleek limited cars than a random vehicle that is seen in the city. This version of the Subaru Sambar is considered discontinued as it was released in 2007, but there are still some stores who still have the old stock that kept this available.

The Bakery truck is simple in aesthetics and Tomica make sure quality on the main classic range of diecast cars are retained through its trademark working suspension and moving parts like the opening panel side to reveal the pastries, bread, and what not Bonjour Fresh Pastry is offering since 1989.

Model to Model | Bakery & Mobile Curry Stand

You can find that there are variations to the Subaru Sambar trucks and side-by-side comparison with the 2016 Tomica Event Model Curry Truck (based on the 2008 Noodle Truck) shows the use of headlights and minor retooling on the casting. Though you can find that both use the same base model with the difference on the rear that they attach to show what food they serve.

However, the bakery truck is a rare casting that is not overused in comparison to the Noodle Truck that has come out with the same use of the rear casting with minor retooling in color and livery on what it is serving, which was also released as limited editions and box sets that most are sold only in Japan.

Overall the Subaru Sambar Bakery is one of the uncommon castings that is released in various Tomica premium range, but has never appeared in the main Tomica range. The only common concern is the use of the button type wheels that is retained from the 1987 base model aside from the bread roof. But entirely this adds to the growing food truck theme for Tomica that hopefully continues to expand with other versions.

Tomica No. 10 Subaru Sambar Bakery was released in the mainline in Japan and Selected Markets in Asia. This was distributed by Bankee and was available in all general retail and was acquired at Toy Kingdom in SM City Makati back in 2015 for ₱179.75 pesos (**$3.36 USD | $5.43 AUD).
