Auto Journal | Vocational Training

The “Vocational Placement” at TAFE is part of the requirement for the Light Vehicle Course. It’s also a requirement from immigration to take this as part of the curriculum in completing the studies in related to become an automotive technician.

This also gives the would-be apprentice the knowledge in applying all the skills in becoming a skilled mechanic. The first day would have been light with the workload, but the day would become full when the cars rolled over the workshop for some quick servicing. The apprentice at Mazda Reynella is all set and ready for the day.

The trip to Reynella by bus only takes 17 minutes and once I have arrived, the service manager, Andy had brought me over the workshop properly introduced to Darren who manages the apprentice at Mazda. I was paired up with Adam, who still conducts additional studies at TAFE. I also assisted other mechanics at the workshop floor that has Dillon, Lee, Ben, and another apprentice-in-training named Josh.

Mazda Reynella’s exterior appears small with the car showroom as its main façade. You can see the latest models from the Mazda 2, 3, 6, and CX series SUVs on display, but when you head back to the workshop its actually a massive place. There the mechanics are set in their individual work area.

There are ten bay areas set to have cars serviced and like any workshop each has lifters. There’s also a basement area where the wash bays and some of the cars available is store. Just outside of that is the huge parking lot where other Mazda cars are parked just awaiting to be sold.

It was a busy day at the workshop and it’s also where I learn some few tips from the mechanics like Adam. The servicing of vehicles is just part how the brand has become trusted and well-known. You also get to learn the difference between servicing a vehicle for long time customers to preparing a new model to be picked up by a new owner. It was definitely a full-on work experience from the usual servicing to assisting mechanics like Ben dismantle a warped dashboard to reinstalling a front passenger seat on a 2016 CX-5.

The last few hours where fast as Adam was installing a tow bar for a new customer on a 2017 CX-5 AWD. Hopefully I get to learn more of the in s and out of being a mechanic. These gentlemen at Mazda are great company they really let you gain experience and learn from each of them how the work is done. This is just one of three “On-the-Job” work experiences in becoming a skilled mechanic.

Thankful and acknowledgments to Andy, their service manager for the opportunity and the rest of Mazda Reynella, which is only the first day and hopeful that I get to gain more experience these fine gentlemen for the next four days.
