Hot Wheels unveiled new castings from their mainline of diecast cars in 2017, and some of them are re-casted with new colors and aesthetics. The Volkswagen Käfer Racer is a new casting that was released in the last quarter of 2016. It is eye catching somewhat radically impressive depiction of a Volkswagen Beetle.
At first, everyone would wonder if this was a ‘Real’ car and the answers is a resounding no. It is sort of “re-imagining” of a concept of what could the VW Beetle can be if it becomes a super car of sorts.
The description below will give you an idea what went to the design and where it took inspiration to shape this new casting for those Beetle-maniacs.
The Volkswagen Käfer Racer (with "Käfer" pronounced as "Kaefer", meaning 'beetle' in German) is a Hot Wheels original model that is based on a Volkswagen Beetle, and was designed by Mark Jones. His objective was "to find the ultimate, crazy racing VW", but one that Volkswagen would agree to because of licensing. Jones took a Custom Beetle and added some parts to the underside and the back.
The Käfer Racer appears to have taken inspiration from a VW Beetle Super Saloon and VWs racing in the Fun Cup. The first release was inspired by the Momo-sponsored Porsche 935/78-81 'Moby Dick' raced by Gianpiero Moretti in the IMSA GT series in the early 1980s. The car has downforce tunnels on the underside of the Beetle, a V8 engine with two exhaust pipes sticking out, and an air scoop on the roof.
Fictional Beetle
With a radical look and low profile it is a speed demon on wheels that has a V8 engine for something that’s not actually a real car. But it definitely works in how it was designed with that aesthetics.
It is a beauty to behold how it came to be in the final product. This is the second color of the Käfer Racer released in 2017. The first was in red which is the signature of color of MOMO branding. This black edition is hard to pass up with all the right angles not to mention how it came together.
Designed Perfection
Based on the description above it takes inspiration from the Porsche 935/78-81 'Moby Dick' raced by Gianpiero Moretti in the IMSA GT series in the early 1980s. It is flat out beauty and if you’re into motorsport you’ll appreciate this casting down to the tiny exhaust sticking out from its rear.
The intimidating look on the first two colors really get an attraction that most would think this is a real car. The wheel type Hot Wheels used on this one certainly makes its more of a sexy beast not just a random type of wheel that’s not overused and this one really looked good painted in yellow.
Black over Red
Choosing either Black or Red is a hard decision unless you’re someone who just get one casting and never repeat getting another one with a different color of livery. Sometimes there’s no second thoughts on which one is better and why not get both.
The MOMO branding certainly makes it challenging to pick the best one even though it is the same casting. Both actually works as this casting might get used again for 2018 and beyond and it will certainly have branding iterations on how the colors would match the body that makes this an impressive catch to collect.
Overall there’s something about this iteration of the Käfer Racer that is quite stunningly pretty looking machine. Even though it’s not a real car but it sure made some people believe it is and if there ever a chance Volkswagen would build one this is not just about the aesthetics, but how it will look like burning rubber on the road.
